building stuff on OS-X is often a bit different than other *nix systems. 
I'd recommend that you try using these packages:

http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/unixport

And also use the Framework Python 2.5 from:

http://pythonmac.org/packages/py25-fat/index.html

That's a good source of other assorted packages that you may need, also.
