[Pythonmac-SIG] speech support in MacPython?

As the developer of a Python-based application suite supporting the use of
Project Gutenberg e-texts that is intended to be fully cross-platform, I
was
wondering about the state of support for speech capabilities in MacPython.
I have included some basic text-to-speech capabilities for Windows and
Linux/Unix platforms, and would like to do the same for Mac OSX. Details
about my project can be found here:

http://pyge.sourceforge.net/

Earlier MacPython documents indicated that the macspeech module
provided some basic support for the Macintosh Speech Manager, but the
latest documentation I could find on MacPython does not mention any
Carbon module for the Speech Manager. The documentation I am
referring to is located here:

http://www.python.org/doc/current/mac/mac.html

My question is whether speech support has been dropped from MacPython,
is still present but unfinished or undocumented, or is something that is
planned to be developed at a later date? I appreciate any information
I can get from participants in this list, since I don't currently have a
Mac OSX platform on which to run tests.

Thanks,s
