[Pythonmac-SIG] i18n - How to find out MacOS language from Python?

How can I find out the particular foreign language (English, 
German, etc...) of a Mac from a Python program running on MacOS 8.x.
The builtin module 'locale' is unfortunately not included in my
latest version of Mac-Python (1.5.2c1).  So I'm looking for
a way to mimic the effect of
       >>> import locale
       >>> locale.setlocale(locale.LC_CTYPE)
       de_DE
