Forgot to mention: I also use Debian unstable.

After I replaced python2.3-gtk2 with python-gtk2 (2.8.6-8), all is well now.

The latter looks like one of those 'virtual' Debian packages which figure out 
what particular version you need and install it by way of a package 
dependency. Whatever it was, pythoncad now runs happily. Thanks for the 
feedback.
