The meeting will run from 19:00 - 21:00, although doors will be open at the GIST Lab from 18:45. The GIST Lab is located opposite Sheffield train station and behind the Showroom cinema: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=GIST+Lab,+Sheffield,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&sll=52.8382,-2.327815&sspn=12.200068,14.128418&oq=GIST+Lab&t=h&hq=GIST+Lab,&hnear=Sheffield,+South+Yorkshire,+United+Kingdom&z=16 Our last meeting before Christmas will be none too serious, as we hack together a text adventure game. On the evening, we'll get into small groups, claim squares from a map, and code the interaction. The player will have to recover a small object from one of your squares, but what they have to do to get it is up to you, so start dreaming up clever gameplay mechanisms. At the end of the session, we'll take some time to play the game on the projector. If you'd like to attend this meeting then please register for free at: http://pythonsheffield1211-eorg.eventbrite.com Please bring a laptop with Python 3 already installed, and a text editor you're comfortable using. The Python Sheffield group is open to all levels of Python user, including those who don't currently know the Python language but would like to learn. We're always looking for future speakers, so if you'd like to talk on anything Python-related and fancy a trip over to Sheffield, please get in touch. We are a furniture workshop based in London, we design, make and sell furniture from our shop and workshop in Brick lane, E2, at prices you can afford. We have developed software using Python in order to support our production system and use our main tool, a computer controlled cutting machine. Over 10 years we have developed a unique technology that allows us to make each piece of furniture, one by one at the price of mass-production. Our aim is to develop this software into a package that will enable other workshops to manufacture furniture on-demand on high streets across the UK. To do this, we need to upgrade to a reliable, network enabled system. Our vision is a web application where customers and franchisees can access hundreds of products, customise them, and send a digital file to their local Unto This Last workshop: a "Digital Craftsman Operating System". We were one of the winners of the Technology Strategy Board ?Tech City Launchpad? competition. We are recruiting a python programmer for a 7 months project, January to July 2013, working full-time from our workshop in Brick lane, E2, in a team of 3. [...] The usual suspect in this field is puppet. Puppet has a lot of users, so presumably a lot of canned, working configuration components. So, a question for those more clued-in than me about puppet: What problems does it leave us with -- through omission or commission -- that Salt Stack solves, or might solve? Problems *other than* not being written in Python! (Like perhaps lots of people, I've worked with in house home-grown puppet-like systems, but not puppet itself.) The github readme focuses more on features than the problems that it solves over the status quo, and does not mention puppet, but hints at problems in other systems with: * covering the whole range from small to large numbers of hosts * working with multiple geographical sites and in the Randall Schwartz interview video, I think these were mentioned: * execution time for operations on large numbers of hosts, and where the command to run depends on information gathered from those hosts rather than from a central database * lack of polymorphism across systems (example mentioned was a generic "install this package" command in Salt) * verbosity of puppet configurations If you consider being written in Python significant (and I guess I do, to some extent) the same question goes for bcfg2, and any other similar tools written in Python. And also for ! And even If I can read ruby to some extend of some black magic, it leaves me dependent on what the documentation provide me. I personally feel the need of tool that I can own.
