URL: From berco at media2b.net Tue Jan 6 11:27:13 2015 From: berco at media2b.net (Berco Beute) Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2015 11:27:13 +0100 Subject: [python-nl] PyGrunn 2015: Date, RFP, and your help Message-ID: Hi everybody, Although we are still very much in the preparing phase we would like to provide you with some information about PyGrunn 2015 (May 22nd at Groninger Forum ). This will give you ample time to block your agenda and hopefully contribute to what is shaping up to be another legendary episode. As you all know PyGrunn is a non-commercial community effort and we would love to keep the fire alive with your help. There are four ways how you can contribute making PyGrunn 2015 a success: 1. Give a *talk* or present a *paper*. You can find the RFP on pygrunn.org . If you know somebody else that might want to present or write a paper, please forward the RFP. New this year will be the papers. We are still working out the details but definitely let us know if you are interested in submitting a paper. 2. Give your *feedback*. Anything you like to see (changed) at PyGrunn? Just fill you the feedback form on pygrunn.org Whether it's about the location, speakers, topics, food, sprints, or t-shirts, the more feedback we get, the better the next conference will be. 3. Become a *sponsor*. With a 25 euro admission fee PyGrunn has probably always been one of the most affordable conferences. Certainly considering the fact that the t-shirt, food and drinks are included. We want to keep it that way and the only way to accomplish that is sponsorship. Paylogic , Goldmund, Wyldebeast & Wunderliebe , Voys , Getlogic and Media2B have been loyal sponsors but we would like to welcome new members to the sponsor family. Just mail info at pygrunn for details. 4. *Help*. Organizing an event like PyGrunn requires quite some effort and we can use all the help we can get. Whether it's updating the website, spreading the word on social media, recording talks, announcing speakers, etc. Although pygrunn.org is still under construction the RFP and feedback forms are working and meant for 2015! More information about the conference will follow shortly, but this should give you enough incentive to save the date and start contributing. Spread the word and we hope to see you all at PyGrunn 2015! In the meantime follow us on Twitter (@pygrunn) , join the PyGrunn Monthly meetups and keep an eye on www.pygrunn.org. Groeten, Guido Hi, I am a visually impaired bioinformatics graduate student using microarray data for my master?s thesis aimed at deciphering the mechanism by which the yeast wild type can suppress the rise of free reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by caloric restriction (CR) thus extending lifespan but the Atg15 and Erg6 knockout mutant cannot. Since my remaining vision is very limited I need very high magnification. But that makes my visual field very small. Therefore I need somebody to teach me how to use these programming environments, especially for microarray analysis, next generation sequencing and constructing gene and pathway interaction networks. This is very difficult for me to figure out without assistance because Zoomtext, my magnification and text to speech software, on which I am depending because I am almost blind, has problems reading out aloud many programming related websites to me. And even those websites it can read, it can only read sequentially from left to right and then from top to bottom. Unfortunately, this way of acquiring, finding, selecting and processing new information and answering questions is too tiresome, exhausting, ineffective and especially way too time consuming for graduating with a PhD in bioinformatics before my funding runs out despite being severely limited by my visual disability. I would also need help with writing a good literature review and applying the described techniques to my own yeast Affymetrix microarray dataset because I cannot see well enough to find all relevant publications on my own. Some examples for specific tasks I urgently need help with are: 1. GO enrichment analysis, e.g. learning how to use the TopGo R package to perform statistical analysis on GO enrichments. 2. Analyzing and comparing the three publically available microarray datasets that can be accessed at: A. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE41860 B. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE38635 C. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GSE9217 3. Learning how to use the Affymetrix microarray analysis software for the Yeast 2 and Yeast S98 chip, which can be found at http://www.affymetrix.com/support/technical/libraryfilesmain.affx 4. For Cytoscape I need somebody, who can teach me how to execute the tutorials at the following links because due to my very limited vision field I cannot see tutorial and program interface simultaneously. A. http://opentutorials.cgl.ucsf.edu/index.php/Tutorial:Introduction_to_Cytoscape_3.1-part2#Importing_and_Exploring_Your_Data B. http://opentutorials.cgl.ucsf.edu/index.php/Tutorial:Filtering_and_Editing_in_Cytoscape_3 C. http://cytoscape.org/manual/Cytoscape2_8Manual.html#Import%20Fixed-Format%20Network%20Files D. http://wiki.cytoscape.org/Cytoscape_User_Manual/Network_Formats Since I am legally blind the rehab agency is giving me money to pay tutors for this purpose. Could you please help me getting in touch regarding this with anybody, who could potentially be interested in teaching me one on one thus saving me time for acquiring new information and skills, which I need to finish my thesis on time, so that I can remain eligible for funding to continue in my bioinformatics PhD program despite being almost blind? The tutoring can be done remotely via TeamViewer 5 and Skype. Hence, it does not matter where my tutors are physically located. Currently I have tutors in Croatia and UK. But since they both work full time jobs while working on their PhD dissertation they only have very limited time to teach me online. Could you therefore please forward this request for help to anybody, who could potentially be interested or, who could connect me to somebody, who might be, because my graduation and career depend on it? Who else would you recommend me to contact regarding this? Where else could I post this because I am in urgent need for help? Could you please contact me directly via email at Thomas.F.Hahn2 at gmail.com and/or Skype at tfh002 because my text to speech software has problems to read out this website aloud to me? I thank you very much in advance for your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, recommendations, advice, time, help, efforts and support. Although that's more oriented towards quick questions, where it seems to work well. Here, I suspect the best tutors will be people familiar with the programs-- even sighted I would have trouble teaching or showing for example Ecplipse to... anyone, as I don't use it. Inaccessible development tools is part of a conversation in a11y circles as it's holding back students and workers with potential. That the websites are also inaccessibly coded is a tragedy, as there's pretty much no excuse for any tutorial site to be written so awful (though it is pretty much the norm). If they were written according to the usual w3c and wcag webstandards they would work fine in ZoomText (which I also use, but more for testing websites than daily work as it only works in Windows). _mallory From eromijn at solidlinks.nl Sun Jan 25 13:48:30 2015 From: eromijn at solidlinks.nl (Erik Romijn) Date: Sun, 25 Jan 2015 13:48:30 +0100 Subject: [python-nl] Looking for a Python mentor for 12 year old Message-ID: <22505FDA-BE9C-44F6-AF23-62A7656C6314@solidlinks.nl> Hi all, Katie, in CC, is a teacher and is looking for someone that is interested in mentoring young people in Python. She asked me to forward her request to this list. Katie teaches the Digital Design class at the Amsterdam International School. Her class has a 12 year old boy who is already writing Python code while his peers are still busy with Scratch (a visual programming tool for education purpose). He's just learning this by reading a book he got as a gift. Katie said that he's looking for a mentor who could help him out learning Python. It could be a little help in a distance. As you can imagine those kids love to talk to people who are working in the field which they're interested in. If you're interested in knowing more about him please contact Katie (copied in Cc) directly off-list. Erik -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
