I just had a conversation that turned like if a community of developers are awfully quiet then be rest assured they are individually dreaming about code......*am not sure how true that is* But on a more serious note I thought I should take the time to hola at the community....... However more interesting news is that more DjangoGirls workshops are going to happen in other parts of Nigeria. So proud of DGLagos girls. Now plans are in place for not just DjangoGirls in OAU and Ogbomoso but one in Ota, Ogun state, and in Port Harcourt. Congratulations Helen(Ogbomoso), Tina (PH), Hamdalah (Ota) and Busayo (who joined OAU organizers), so proud of you girls. More exciting is I heard some of the attendees have been proactive and gone ahead to form WhatsApp groups with their mentors where they get to ask their #django questions and their mentors have been very helpful in helping them figuring things out. #ThankYou Here's me soliciting for help and support in terms of Mentorship, Sponsorship, Media awareness et. al. for the upcoming DjangoGirls, just like you all did for DGLagos which was a huge success. Official photos and video links coming up soon in that regard ;) Wishing everyone a productive week ahead....... School + coding + exams = No free time So, here's a quick rundown of whats been happening in the preparation towards DjangoGirls OAU: 1. Due to 'official' reasons, the original venue we got was handed out to some more important people for some other event. As such, we've had to start scouting for a new venue for the event. Thankfully, IEEE OAU SB has generously offered to help us in subsidizing the fee for the new venue. 2. We were recently generously sponsored by Github, and PSF for the event . A big shutout to both of these great organizations. 3. Due to a recent shift in the school calendar that would have most of the registered girls not be able to attend the event, we are in the process of postponing the event to some later time where everyone can make it. The new date would be circulated once we get it approved. 4. assume_inifinity = 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 #Yes. I know it exceeds the limit for i in range(assume_inifinity): print "We need MENTORS" We all know the event really cant hold without having mentors to take these young girls in what could possibly be the biggest turning point of their lives. So, we are still in search of mentors. Please, make it a date with us. That should be all on DjangoGirls OAU for now. Oh and Helen, you mentioned you run a Python Club on campus? Well, i'd love to speak to you about that. Now, for something almost as interesting. An idea hit me recently. Now, i was wondering if the community would love to work on writing a book on learning Python the Nigerian way prior the time that work would start on the open source projects. This book i feel should highlight what it takes to be a programmer(Python) in Nigeria. It should be like the go to book for every beginner of the language in the country. The book would also be fun since there'd be colloquial jabs and the whats what that makes the Nigerian English Lingua standout. As and added bonus, the book would come in good cause it wont code that someone has to finish at a point in time. it could be something that you'd go to, drop a line or a chapter and go on with something else. Now, i already spoke to Aisha about the idea and she loved it. All we need now is an indication of interest from the rest of you guys. In the absence of any other information, i would love to say " Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta" ? Also I checked the workshop's photos on flickr and am mesmerized seeing through the perspective of Happy People, all are lovely with moments of happiness wishing last more longer which I still hope we do have in the other coming workshops. @Olabayo & @Chukudi thanks for keeping on, moderating and constant messages in this mailing list @TosinAnimashaun the article on Django Girls Lagos Workshop is thoughtful and lovely, I really appreciate the efforts put into it @Lekan thanks for evangelizing for Django Girls whereby also promoting Python and it's community though I know it's not easy combining school activities with organizing DjangoGirls in anyway we are here to help and I love the idea for the Python Book in a Nigeria version @all thanks for voting and the support of wanting to work on a open source project and below is the documentation of mErgencyNG. The community is free to discuss and modify it you see fit. Thanks all and in Aisha's mode am wishing you a Pythonic Day. Hugs and pecks! mErgencyNG is a crowd sourced platform for all security agencies, disaster management outfits or organizations, hospitals and road safety corps and the citizenries for a quick responds and threats notification from the citizenries to the government or appropriate authorities for safeguarding lives and properties. In a Nigeria of today there is no web or mobile app that augment the efforts of our security forces because civilians are detached from the system, they are afraid to report incidents so not to be the first suspect. Every citizens want to be connected with what government is doing and with the level of awareness and the advocacy of community policing and to curb the rising insurgency in Nigeria each and everyone are the users of the application and with the current population of Nigeria as at today if only we have 20million users am sure we will be well informed. The users of the application can use it to report any crime to the police, accidents can be reported to police or FRSC, we can call ambulance in case of emergency, call for assistance from vigilante group, notify civil defence on any vandalism, report suspicious items to bomb squad or terrorism to the appropriate authorities Create a web and mobile app that people can use to report any crime or emergency to the appropriate authorities. We can also use the application to place inform of advert for missing person, stolen items or vehicle and also integrate with social media for allowing neighbours, friends, families and our networks to notify us if they see the items missing. VISION: * Secured and safe neighbourhood, peaceful nation for all MISSION: * To ensured a safe and secured communities through collaboration and engagement of citizens OBJECTIVES: * To protect lives and properties * To support by provision of emergency assistance when needed * To assist victims of emergency medical needs without the rigour of police report document before treatment * To report crime without be seen as a first suspect * To facilitate information sharing between security agencies and the citizens OVERVIEW OF THE mErgencyNG mErgencyNG will be a web and mobile app solution aimed at improving response of security, road safety, medical, army, fire and other services to emergency incidents while it will be used to creating a social media buzz amongst users. Developing countries such as Nigeria has a huge gap in notifying the respective emergency services about demanding situation and this web and mobile application seeks to fill this gap. This web and mobile application directly affects those who find themselves in emergency situations in a country with absolutely no helpline / emergency hotline like other developed countries of the world. Publicity of emergencies goes along way in notifying the various emergency services available for decisive action and this web and mobile application enables access to highly coordinated and distributed emergency care. This application has a great potential to affect a large group of people deeply whilst filling up the large vacuum of emergency notification and responses in a developing country like Nigeria. It also brings location based services to citizens. In that way, we are able to bring emergency services (Ambulance, fire services, Police, Red Cross, FRSC and rescue) delivering services and cabs - as well as other location based services to all areas with no (clearly defined) street addresses. The group (Python Nigeria): I have noticed that all activity in this group is focused on web development in general and the use of Django in particular. I think this current focus on Django as a sole web development framework has been one of the reasons why I have not been an active member and I dont think I am the only one who feels this way because I think I speak for some other Pythonistas too. Python is a versatile scripting language which has uses in areas as diverse as physics to robotics to biology to animation etc. There are some people here who can contribute their wealth of knowledge gained from using Python in various areas which we could all gain from. Let's not shut them out. About the Python book (Nigerian newbie version). I am all for this idea and would like to add a little of what I know to the body of knowledge. How do we do a collaborate authoring of the book? Ideas are welcome. It's sad to note the problems you've encountered while it is also a good thing to know that donations have come from people who are always there for these kind of events. As for the book, we need a concrete way to go about it and I think you should bring it to the slack channel for further discussions. I would like to partake of it. It's a nice concept. I would suggest that we divide the topics and assign to those who volunteer to write on them. More than one person can write on a topic so that it would be rich enough. There would also be those who would review it and then turn it into formats that can be downloaded. We should set up committee and begin to look into things like this. @all I only made suggestions and others are free to critique it. @olamilec mErgencyNG is what we all decided to work on at the last meet up so it is a welcome idea. Based on what I talked about in @Lekan's part, we should have a committee that would help us out with these things. And I would be willing to partake of the coding part. So, the first thing is having a github account for Pythonistas in Nigeria and then we would be able to work from there. I seize this opportunity to welcome every new members of this list. We see your mails and are happy to read them. Bros, thanks for taking the time to itemize mErgencyNG, it is really appreciated. @all DjangoGirls are calling for tutors, please help to volunteer. Please, if you are able to, help out with this task. I've signified my intention for @Lekan and the DjangoGirls Ota. iChux? http://bit.ly/iscrape *Behind every no entry sign, there is a door.* On 9 March 2016 at 18:00, wrote: > Send python-nigeria mailing list submissions to > python-nigeria at python.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-nigeria > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > python-nigeria-request at python.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > python-nigeria-owner at python.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of python-nigeria digest..." > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I've invited you to the slack channel. We are one large Python group in Nigeria & we would not consider you far away. Just look at it this way: Nigeria is our territory and we hope to fill in up with Pythonistas one day. The era of being lonely, like I've been in all my years before I met other programmers, is gone. We would love to see you contribute in all areas that you are able to, and when DjangoGirls comes up in that part of Nigeria, we would be happy to render any assistance that we can. How is Kano? We look forward to more good news from that region. Message-ID: Good evening everyone, hope you guys are good? First of all, a BIG WELCOME to Umar Yusuf, and all new-comers. We are happy to have you. Trust me, you have come to a place that you will meet a lot of beautiful, smart people, who are always ready to help. People I am proud of. I have been receiving emails (digests) from this group, I love them. And it is now a new habit for me to always anticipate emails (digests) from this group, 'cause it always lighten up my day. Shout out to Aisha, Lekan, and others who have been contributing constantly. I just want to ask the admins if there is a way to structure these emails (digests), so they are more readable, it isn't very easy to differentiate which email is fresh, and which is not. For the Django girls clubs, meetup, training, thumbs up for the organizers and the mentors. I would have loved to be part of the mentors but I am not close to any of those venues, and I think I need mentoring myself J i.e I am still a newbie, and I doubt I can do much mentoring. The mErgencyNG is a good idea, and I hope to be part of it. Another cool idea is the Naija Python Book, are we using pidgin? (Hehehehe, just kidding) Hmmm. okay, I am not much of a writer, and like I said, I am still a beginner but, let's see how it goes, who knows guys like us might have some space in it. Okay, okay, mail is getting boring, and I know you guys can't wait to continue coding, so I don't want to be a stumbling block. I want to wish everyone a fruitful weekend. Message-ID: Hola pythonistas, So I know I am a bit late to the many conversations that has ensued this past week, and to some of you it might sound like stale gist. But there are lots of amazing comments I just would like to contribute and respond to. I humbly request your patience. Hi Abdul-Hakeem it's a real delight to have you hear. Nagode in my not so Hausa voice. I am sure as time goes by and python events start happening in Kano many of us would be happy to make the trip down. I was actually born in Kano but don't remember much, and would be happy to have an excuse to come down :) Hello PyStar more than just a group we hope to build a community where everything about Python and not just Django is discussed. I apologize if that's the impression you get. But please feel free to come on and talk about anything related to python. Like you said Python is a general purpose language and not just about Django. I personally, whose path is data science would love to rant about the problems have had with using basemap in Anaconda for plotting interactive maps. But then again there is also the slack channel with various channels covering various topics, feel free to create other channels covering aspects of Python you are interested in. Bottom line is, so far, everyone here who has contributed has been super amazing with an atmosphere of knowledge and support for any idea that comes in, and knowing how awesome this community is there is no way anyone would be shut out. I know we would all agree that if someone for instance comes and post something about using python for queuing systems, even though before one hadn't the slightest clue, others sure would learn a thing or two from the conversation; me inclusive.. Lekan I love the python book the Naija way idea. Maybe we should all come up and agree with a title then you create a repository and we all can contribute our quota. The thought of a book trying to explain a for loop with examples of a Lagos bus conductor screaming "enter with your change" 10 times over, or explaining the concept of list or collections with Iya Sikira food joint just makes me giggle *Okay maybe I am over exaggerating*. But I do like the idea of putting our jabs into the book giving it Learning Python the Naija Way #APossibleTitle ;) ? and also please share the github repo. Ohh I think I missed the suggestion where Chuks suggested a github account for the Python Nigeria community where all community based projects can be in one account. Has that been done yet? If so what's the github name/link? @Olamilekan awesome finally a run down of mErgency., please point us to the github repo so we all can see how we could contribute. Or whichever way we could contribute. Am sorry don't know any asides github. I know you already showed us the demo during the meetup. If you give us links and a roadmap to point us to where we see what's on ground or has been done then come up with our own contributions. Hello @Umar and every other person who has just joined us you are very much welcome to the community :) The community where many great pythonistas in Nigeria reside. @WafiJoe I hail thee. I thought I was the only one with the DIgest anticipation. It's such a delight to read emails from our dear pythonistas. Am totally in support of subtly adding pidgin jabs to the book. Afterall the book is to be in such a way that it's more fun with a dash of our humor to make even the average Nigerian more interested. Thanks Eyitemi for keeping the Slack group up and running. I have been super busy but went there a couple of days ago and I was amazed at how much we've grown and the many conversations. Truth is the slack channel is way more active than the mailing list. with channels like #codereview #flask I even created one for data science. Yaaay!!! I sincerely apologize for my really long email. Thanks for putting up with this girl and her long emails *lol* I guess to round off I would like to appeal to more people to take advantage of this community and feel free to talk about absolutely anything/ everything python related. From data science to robotics, animation, space, physics, and not just Django and Flask even though that is the most popular topic on this list. All are welcome. For we are One Awesome Community with the best minds that I am personally proud of. and there you have it the end.............. oops before I forget so I finally got approval from Pyladies to help facilitate PyLadies in Nigeria. Basically this idea originally cameup as a continuity measure where we could hold regular weekly meetups and some of Django Girls can meet to continue in their coding journey or just finish the tutorial. But PyLadies meetup hope to reach out to all ladies regardless and who is interested in getting their hands busy with anything Python related. Be it going through a codecademy python tutorial or coursera python essentials or just working on a project together. Learning to code with someone is a lot more fun than learning alone. Although I haven't quite figured everything out. So if anyone would like to lend a helping hand in facilitating the meetups that would be so super. Hoping we can get things in place and have our first meetup next month. Hit me up...... And if you haven't yet see our official DGLagos pictures and short video clip here :D I promise this is actually the end ;) Do continue to have a pythonic week ahead....... *p.s. In my opinion that's where all the PythonNigeria action is going on. SO to answer your question I have two different answers although it's not exactly the python Nigeria community meetup; I know Temi Adeoye is planning a meetup next month for the Lagos Python meetup group < http://www.meetup.com/lagos-python-meetup/>. I am delighted and proud to announce PyLadies Nigeria meetup group and the Launch happening on the 16th of April < http://www.meetup.com/pyladiesnigeria/events/229742362/>, on twitter we are @pyladiesnigeria. By popular demand and the need for DjangoGirls and more ladies to learn and continue in their coding journey while getting the much needed support from industry professionals. We hope to have these meetups at least twice a month covering a broad range of topics from web development to data science, robotics and anything else that is Python and Fun. All skill levels are welcome to join, collaborate and learn together. Massive shout out to the PSF and Naomi for supporting us always. I promised this won't be long and am taking extreme measures to not bore you with an epistle ;) and err for anyone who wants to join the PythonNigeria slack channel, here we go https://pynigeria.typeform.com/to/QyQVL3 Continue to have a pythonic week everyone. I program in Flask, that's not in doubt, but the inbuilt server for development could be slow at times and it also lacks the ability to have a certificate to make it serve connections on secure protocol, https (on this I might be wrong, so please correct me). But I took it upon myself to draw out a part of the Rocket webserver that web2py uses and then added some generated certificates (this is to avoid re-invention the wheel). The beauty of it now is that it's fast in starting up and can serve Flask, Django and other wsgi frameworks. Rocket webserver, according to this link: https://launchpad.net/rocket, is a quality webserver that can be used in production. I've yet to use it in production but on development, it runs circles. As against the version 1.2.4 on PyPi and the parent page, the one I have is version 1.2.6. I have been able to use it for tests too. I have added it as the default test server for Flask applications in PySide and it also stands as a separate module. My tests now complete faster. I have attached a screenshot of the app running on a secure localhost. I'm sorry, I tried cropping it but do not have the app to do so on my Mac. In essence, I have to modules for you guys, where do I release them to? Do we have a fixed account online for such? If it's missing, can I create a github account for PyNigeria? And I also had discussion with Aisha on how to make us viable and relevant in the scheme of things in this country but a meetup is necessary to discuss them. When, where and how do we meet? That section of slack has been busy for days now, thanks to you all. @Aisha, I enjoy your mails a lot. They are usually laced with funny sides, please keep it up. After all, it shouldn't be formal all the time, should it? I welcome the PyLadies and I'm also making sure that I give off my time, as it permits, to help the event see the light of the day. For those who do not know, @Aisha has been working hard for a venue and we look forward to response after the holidays. Aisha, you too much!
