How have you been using the slack channel, as in, are there any benefits you've derived from it? I have been communicating a lot through it and I've been able to meet some great people through it too. You talked about backend, do you do it also in Python? And if yes, is it with a framework? One thing I've learned in that Python community is real and friendly. On PyLadies: So shout out to @Ichux for helping us secure a venue for the next 3 months for our bi weekly meetups. Yaaay guys it's finally happening. Save the date the Launch of Pyladies Nigeria is happening this coming Saturday on the 16th. See more details here http://www.meetup.com/pyladiesnigeria/ Inspired by a recent article I read on Medium we have decided to open up the floor to guys to come and celebrate our Launch with us. Hurry though only 9 spots left. Like I said before PyLadies is going to be framework agnostic and hopes to touch all key areas of the general purpose language ranging from data Science to web development, robotics etc... On another note just incase you missed it too on the Python-Africa mailing list; for those of us interested in PyCon ZA their call for proposals is open. See more here https://za.pycon.org/ It would be amazing to have some of you represent the PyNigeria community at SouthAfrica. Please submit a talk or workshop proposal.................... I understand that as geeks, most of use are by disposition less social than *mere mortals*. :) :B However, we should know that we are 'somewhat' pioneering something here, *if done right*. There are "very few" *active* communities around any tehcnology in Nigeria. A simple google search for "user(s) group Nigeria" reveals this. Over and abroad from where we all -- permit me to say this -- run to to learn (or even copy) a bulk of what we know, communities are a lot more involved; so much so that just about every technology has an *[XYZ]*Con these days (only recently, someone had mentioned the *DjangoCon* in our Slack community). These things didn't just start big. They mostly started from small communities like what we have now. Just a while ago, the *#pydata* channel appeared to be going abuzz with interesting conversations (a book-reading "challenge" even). Despite not contributing much to that channel, I enjoyed reading the conversations in my spare time and learned from them. But that channel has suddenly gone quiet now. Sometime ago, *Ifeanyi Oraelosi* (a.k.a *@gnerkus*) was sharing daily algorithmic challenges from programming challenge/contests platforms like Hackerrank and CodeWars, until he got discouraged by *our loud silence* and non-reponse, then stopped. We even have projects on ground that have yet to kick off, most notably projects from the two Lekans in the house: *eMergency* app and the proposed *Python-For-The-Average-Nigerian* book. I am certainly just as guilty in all of this, so I am calling us collectively to bring life [again] into this community. We can make this happen. I see no reason why anyone should regret being a part of this community (if there be any such person), expecially considerring how ubiquitous the Python programming language is today. On the contrary, We should be proud. :) So first of welcome Temitope nice to have you on here. Message-ID: Bonsoir Pythonistas, Hope we all had a great week and enjoyed the weekend. *clears throat* I write to bring you guys gists of how the launch of #PyLadiesNigeria went. First of thanks to the PSF *#SupportingPythonistasSinceTimeImmemorial* and UpperLink Nigeria for generously giving us a very conducive space to host our event. We couldn't have done it without them. A massive shout out to my co-organizer @TomiwaOrlu for a great job in making sure the event went smooth. We started off by introducing ourselves, talked about our experiences, what we hoped to learn/achieve on an individual basis from subsequent PyLadies meetups an generally just got to know ourselves. We had a rich mix of amazing ladies from Obiamaka who's in the travel industry to Tomiwa in Quality control Hamdalah and Mercy (DG Ota and Akure organizers respectively) and a host of many other interesting ladies. What was thrilling and amazing was we had guys from the PyNigeria community #PyMen (*honestly that's what they called themselves*) who came to support and encourage us. When Chukwudi #ichux came to inspire us and assure us of his ever non failing support for the group while we learnt from his truck load of 12 years experience as a python developer, Osas #Oxax gave a lot of helpful tips on how we might go about achieving our learning objectives and suggested a lot of helpful resources and overcoming the fear of being stuck in the learning phase. We were also honored to receive a lot of love from Olamilekan #eMergency who came all the way from Ibadan to support us, and his wealth of suggestions, tips and advice was amazing. We also had Emmanuel join us from the R users meetup group. It was a rich confluence of amazing people showing support to PyLadies. In a nutshell our interests centered around Data science, S/W design network, web design e.t.c we hope to form our subsequent meetup timetables covering various topics in this area and more. And there you go........ how Pyladies launch went. Wishing everyone a pythonic week ahead. Message-ID: Hola Pythonistas, Hope everyone had a great weekend. The weekend is over so soon again :( So being me I thought I pen a few words at the start of the week. Call it #FoodforThought. this shouldn't take long.... So first of a warm welcome to Temitope Oyenuga. It's interesting to have a diverse range of people using python for different awesome things. I just coined a personal mantra "Wherever You Are, Whatever you need #Python is always there for you with a framework :)" Looking forward to learning some of the cool things Python avails the networking space from Temitope. Most of our community conversations have centered on web and data...... So as regards our young and vibrant community, I was thinking and I thought to myself we've come so far in these past few months (built an amazing community, have DG workshops to our name, done a meetup, have a buzzing slack team), so what's next? What happened to our plans of putting PyNigeria on the map and registering as a not-for-profit in Nigeria? What happened to having another meetup? what happened to our projects? What happened to the plans of PyNigeria Conference? While I am proud of what we've been able to accomplish as a community I can't but wonder what's next. While it may seem everything is perfect I honestly don't want us stuck in the beginner phase of community, as tempted as I am to come up with excuses and blame Nepa or fuel scarcity. I am keen to write more but I would love to hear from you guys about how we can move our community ahead. Proactive steps. I forsee a PyCon Nigeria in the nearest future where we attract great minds from around the world into our dear own....... As a reference I am going to reference some of the advice Naomi gave us in February. FYI we are not yet on the wiki page :(...someone please take it up :-( Join the Python-Africa mailing list to add your voice there - > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-africa - add a presence (even if it's a link to this mailing list's info page) for Nigeria on the Python wiki's user groups page - https://wiki.python.org/moin/LocalUserGroups#Other_Africa - Become a member of the Python Software Foundation. Basic membership is free, just go to https://www.python.org/accounts/login/ and create an account and you are a basic member! - Join/post on the PSF-Community mailing list. All PSF members around the world are welcome to post and connect using that list. It would be great place to let the world of Python know what you are doing. - Become a voting member of the PSF - if you put in 5 hours a month (or 60 hours a year) doing Python community work (organizing, coding, documentation, etc) you are eligible to become a voting member. Voting members vote to elect the board members (like me), to accept sponsor companies, and on other issues of governance as they arise. The more diverse and widespread our voters are the more likely the board and governance will represent everyone and make better decisions, so we really need you. The info on becoming a voting member this way is at http://pyfound.blogspot.de/2015/02/enroll-as-psf-voting-member.html - Working group. The PSF has a structure to create working groups for projects as needed. If you have a project or goal, we might be able to create a working group. Contact me for more advice on that. - Get funding. The PSF offers funding for meetups and conferences around the world. For more information on how to do this, go to https://www.python.org/psf/grants/ and I again would be happy to help > out. I am really looking forward to reading from many of you......This is Ours......Let's make this count. We already started we might as well give it all we've got. Dear Pythonistas in Nigeria, Why are we so silent on these issues? Let's add vibrancy and enthusiasm to this whole thing since a "tree can't make a forest" One thing I know that's been affecting us all is the "current economic situations" that we find ourselves. But then, let's have that inner motivation and the I-Can-Do-It attitude. Many people subscribed to this list and the slack channel but activated their silent mode. Once in while, we need you to talk so that we would know what people want. We have an email address and github account too. What about those? I believe we all are doing great. First off, I'd like to thank you all for supporting Django girls Ogbomoso event so far. Thanks to all of those who volunteered to coach the girls; you really are awesome.?So far, we have 30 girls and about 7 coaches on ground. We are planning to have three girls to one coach, which is where I am really pleading for your help. The point is, we need more coaches. ?I understand that the economy is not friendly presently and many of us might dread the idea of travelling all the way down to Ogbomoso, but we can only beg you to please do it for the girls who will never forget you for teaching them what might pave a great way for their success in life eventually. Who knows whether you will be coaching the Sheryl Sandberg of Nigeria at this event ;)?The bottom line of this story is that we need three more coaches. Please if you will be available on the 6th and 7th of May (next weekend) kindly help us to coach these girls and we promise to make you feel as comfortable as possible. It is through these differences that our community experiences great successes and continued growth. When you're working with members of the community, we encourage you to follow these guidelines which help steer our interactions and strive to keep Python a positive, successful, and growing community. A member of the Python community is: Open Members of the community are open to collaboration, whether it's on PEPs, patches, problems, or otherwise. We're receptive to constructive comment and criticism, as the experiences and skill sets of other members contribute to the whole of our efforts. We're accepting of all who wish to take part in our activities, fostering an environment where anyone can participate and everyone can make a difference. I am adding my voice to the plea for DjangoGirls Ogbomoso. I will also be coaching at the workshop, and I honestly can't wait to be in a room filled with new/ prospective Pythonistas as well as other mentors (Heroes). Rolake you're highly welcome to the community, we look forward to hearing and seeing you be active in the community and your contributions. So guys a lot of conversations have stemmed up on slack channel on we registering PyNigeria http://new.cac.gov.ng/home/part-a-registry/ Tomiwa aka. @tmdobleu gave a suggestion that registering as a company limited by guarantee applies to us. and @emmaakin says a letter of recognition from the global python community would help out, and the rest would just be a couple of things here and there. @naomiceder PSF board member has suggested we write a letter to the PSF and she would be happy to have a look. If you want to see the conversation head over to slack on the #general channel. Guys I have no idea whatsover what registering a company in Nigeria entails, and would appreciate anyone with an experience come on and tell us their experience and drop a how to advice. There has been recent conversations which prompted me to bring to the attention a Code of Conduct. We are part of a global python movement hence, as our community grows there is need to maintain the good atmosphere of community we have built so far. In another email I published the PSF code of conduct for the community. I encourage everyone to take a moment and go through it *if you haven't before* as the code of conduct applies to all facets of the community. I can assure you it's shorter than my emails ;) Wishing everyone an awesome long weekend :D Aisha Bello
