tarfile : read from a socket?

I have:

  sock = socket.create_connection((server,port))
  bs = kB64
  taro = tarfile.open(fileobj=sock.makefile('w',kB64),mode='w')

AttributeError: '_fileobject' object has no attribute 'tell'
