Actually, the people I talk to are to be forgiven for not understanding
that 3.5 does not work for them given that the installer does not
spit them out with a fail message at the start.

It's the next step.

"Why can you not make a product for my perfectly working system!"

that I was thinking about.

And, to be fair, lots of them are grandparents who want to be able to
see their grandchildren's turtle programs ....

Not the usual case for 'need to download python', to be sure
