There're certainly not mutually exclusive.  Mutually exclusive means if 
you have one, you can't have the other.

I think the phrase you're looking for is "orthogonal concepts".  You can 
have either, or both, or neither, and the existence of one doesn't imply 
anything about the existence of the other.
