That would be simple:

Replace

output += '<td colspan="' + str(4-len(columns)) + '"\>' + item +
'</td\> '

with

if len(columns) >= 3:
     output += '<td\>'
else:
     output += '<td colspan="' + str(4-len(columns)) + '"\>'
output += item + '</td\> '

(untested as well; keep the indentation in mind!)
