Less general than chain.from_iterable(izip(repeat("insertme"), x)):
>>> x = [1, 2, 3]
>>> y = 2*len(x)*["insertme"]
>>> y[1::2] = x

['insertme', 1, 'insertme', 2, 'insertme', 3]
