How about using a set instead?

   >>> a = {1, 2, 3}
   >>> a
   {1, 2, 3}
   >>> a |= {4}
   >>> a
   {1, 2, 3, 4}
   >>> a |= {4}
   >>> a
   {1, 2, 3, 4}
   >>> _
