split() and string.whitespace

Or, for faster per-repetition (blending in to your use-case):

     import string
     SEP = string.maketrans('abc \t', '     ')
     ...
     parts = 'whatever, abalone dudes'.translate(SEP).split()
     print parts

['wh', 'tever,', 'lone', 'dudes']
