..as used by OpenOffice, Gimp, Pidgin (Gaim), etc.

However, if you only need a few basics (Save, Print, etc.) just use the 'standard' for the platform. Whatever you do, don't mix different styles of icon.

Note that for Windows the application icon (the thing you see on the Desktop or in a folder) is done as an .ico file, which has multiple sizes in the same file. You'll need to create this in an editor such as Visual Studio.
