Compare:

with:

>>> lines = ['5\n', '2\n', '7\n', '3\n', '6\n']
>>> lines2 = lines
>>> lines[:] = [line.rstrip('\n') for line in lines]
>>> lines
['5', '2', '7', '3', '6']
>>> lines2
['5', '2', '7', '3', '6']

Assigning to lines[:] changes the original list. Assigning to lines  
rebinds the name to the result of the list comprehension, but doesn't  
affect the original list.
