Same here, so I use:

sudo ssh -L119:newsgroups.comcast.net:119 carl at my.box.at.home.com
carl at asus17:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.0.1       asus17.personnelware.com        asus17
127.0.0.1       newsgroups.comcast.net
