It's pretty easy with an re:

 >>> import re
 >>> fooRe = re.compile(r'foo.*?\((.*?)\)')
 >>> fooRe.search('foo(bar)').group(1)
'bar'
 >>> fooRe.search('This is a foo bar baz blah blah (bar)').group(1)
'bar'
