Regex for repeated character?

Another way, ever so slightly less complicated:

 >>> [x[0] for x in re.findall(r"((.)\2*)", "foo bar baaaz")]
['f', 'oo', ' ', 'b', 'a', 'r', ' ', 'b', 'aaa', 'z']
