There is a pretty complete (no pun intended) example in the standard
cmd module

Check file cmd.py in your Python installation .../lib/pythonX.Y/cmd.py,
specifically the methods Cmd.preloop() and Cmd.complete().
Another, more elaborate example is in PySH at
