unstatisfied symbols building Python 2.4.1 on HP-UX 10.20

I'm trying to build Python 2.4.1 on HP-UX 10.20 and get the following 
during linking:

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols:
    PyThread_acquire_lock (code)
    PyThread_exit_thread (code)
    PyThread_allocate_lock (code)
    PyThread_free_lock (code)
    PyThread_start_new_thread (code)
    PyThread_release_lock (code)
    PyThread_get_thread_ident (code)
    PyThread__init_thread (code)


I tried adding the -D_REENTRANT flag to OPTS as suggested in the 
README, but that didn't seem to help/harm.  I searched the python lists 
and found lots of folks commiserating on HP-UX building, but no 
solutions other than building with '--without-threads', which simply 
isn't an option for me.  Any hints?
