It is possible. Been there done that for testing purposes with python-ldap 
2.0.x, OpenLDAP 2.2.x libs, Cyrus-SASL 2.1.18+ and heimdal 0.6.2+. Make sure 
the underlying libs are up to date.

I had to use --no-addresses with heimdal's kinit. But that was probably my 
screwed up DNS zone in my test configuration.
