HP10.x and PIL

Has anyone successfully compiled PIL on HP10.x system?
I beat on it most of yesterday, no luck.
with gcc, the libImaging code compiles fine, and
setup.py build runs fine until link-time (to create _imaging.sl) with this
error:

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
/bin/ld: Invalid loader fixup for symbol "ImagingDestroyArray".
error: command 'ld' failed with exit status 1

I'm still on Python 2.2, on a HP-UX-B.10.20 system.
any ideas appreciated.
