Pychecker can find misspelled variables in functions. For the code

def twice(x):
    return 2*xx

It produces the warnings

1: Parameter (x) not used
2: No global (xx) found

Pychecker is not much help in finding misspelled variables in your main program,
compared to just running the program.

See http://pychecker.sourceforge.net/ .
