[python-list] What am I doing wrong here?

I'm befuddled.  I could have sworn I saw the bad behavior with both Python
2.3.4 and Python built from CVS.  It currently works with 2.3.4 but not
CVS...  Hmmm...  Makes me think maybe I'm not doing anything wrong after
all.
