How to add readline support to python 2.3b1 on HP-UX?

I've downloaded and installed gnu readline 4.3.
I can't seem to get python to use it, though.
My various attempts at tweaking the configure
process either die during the configure script
itself is running, or produce an executable that's
for all I can see not readline-enabled (with or
without an ~/.inputrc). Do I have to use one of
the --enable-XYZ switches, and if so, which one?
