latin1 encoding as default?

Many thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for,
it works fine in a Python 2.3 scirpt
but how can I tell idle .
If I enter
# _*_ coding: latin1 _*_

as the first line in 'idle'
it doesn't have an effect.

Did I miss something?
