Python vs PHP for our rewrite?

PHP is currently more "cool" than Python, and it is integrated into
some "cool" programs, but my experience is that it is not faster
than Python. 

I agree that more companies host PHP than Python, but I did not think
of this as a performance thing. There are a bunch that host Python.

I guess we will have to do some exact timing on PHP vs. Python.

PHP must be sold as source while Python has the option for source and/or
compiled

A Google search for "hosting php" yields about 7x the number of hits as
"hosting python".
