uninstalling Python

As you do this on Linux, and have not used RPM to install Python, it is
safe to just remove all files.

I'm surprised you are talking about a "Python-2.3a1 directory", though.
Normally, python installs into /usr/local/{bin/lib}, and 2.3b1 
overwrites all of 2.3a1.
