Have you seen VPython?

http://vpython.org/

I am suprised it isn't mentioned here more.

This is an exciting time to be learning how to program. When I was
12, I learned to program with Applesoft, back in the days when
personal computers were shipped with a BASIC interpreter built-in.
Python is the first language to capture the fun of Applesoft.
VisualBasic was fun for a few months, but Python is the real deal.

You will have the benefit of using an open-source language. When you
want to show your 11 year old daughter/son how to program, you can
just fire up Python3000 and run the programs you are writing today.
(You may have to use the -oldskool option on Python3000 ;-)

If I tried to run my old Applesoft programs today, I would be
violating Apple's copyright, since I no longer own the hardware...
