This seems like something that is really best done as a web page,
doesn't it?

But if you are really just looking to try your hand at a programming
task, I don't want to spoil your fun ;)  This might not be the best
place to start, a text-only program is usually much easier to start
with.  If you want to try a GUI, I think PythonCard (pythoncard.sf.net)
is exactly the sort of environment that would work well for this.  They
have tutorials and other documentation.
