Others have posted the split() solutions.
You could also search backward in Python:

 >>> s = "aaa/bbb/ccc/dd"
 >>> s[s.rfind('/')+1:]
 'dd'
 >>> s='no_slashes'
 >>> s[s.rfind('/')+1:]
 'no_slashes'
