For this to work, you need to
a) explain slrn that your console uses UTF-8, and
b) tell PuTTY to use UTF-8 in the console.

Then, slrn should determine that all characters of the message are
supported.

I don't know how to do either a) or b) with PuTTY and slrn; for a),
setting LANG to en_US.UTF-8 might be sufficient.
