That's not the problem. In IDLE of Python 2.2, entering non-ASCII in the 
interactive mode will always cause a UnicodeError in IDLE. This is 
partially fixed in Python 2.3 - probably not for the OP, though, since 
Python 2.3 won't ship with a gb2312 codec, atleast on Windows.
