Thanks, this is very encouraging.
Yes, the current C implementation is probably
near the best compromise between readability,
maintainability and efficiency that can be
achieved with a static system.

To make substantial improvements possible, the
word "static" must go away.

Never heard of this, but this is my dream, too.
