[tkinter]: Titles Of Tear-Off Menus Missing

I have a program which has a variety of tear-off menus.  When
run on Win32, the 'torn off' menu properly displays the menu
item as its title.  On Unix (both Mandrake Linux 9.0 and FreeBSD 4.7)
this title is only sometimes present - often I see a title like
"****".

Is this a known Tk/Tkinter problem on Unix or is there some special
magic I am missing?
