My opinion:

I switched from Perl to Python because object oriented programming
is more beautiful in Python. It uses view special characterers which
makes the code more readable.

Everything you can solve with python can be solved with perl, too.
Perl is good if you want to write small scripts for system
administration. Nevertheless I use python for this task, too.
