I'm surprised that no Linux company has focused on this issue
properly, although they would need to have a lot of cash to cover all
the ground in the hardware business. The problem is that even those
who do want to make things easier for the end-user (and despite your
assertions, there *are* plenty of people like that doing open source
development), attempting to get proprietary hardware information often
results in a flat-out denial from the vendor or an offer to sign an
NDA. On the basis of good intentions and vendor non-cooperation, it's
pretty hard to persuade people that you can offer "value to the
consumer".

P.S. Although it probably won't interest you, there are quite a few
interesting toolkits applicable to game writing in Python, such as
Pygame and PyOpenGL. Pygame doesn't directly cover the 3D stuff that
may interest you, but it's a lot of fun anyway.
