If you want a good example of how Forth is used to implement a powerful, 
low-level, processor independent environment, take a look at 
OpenFirmware ( IEEE-1275) and OpenBIOS:

Forth code is used to implement processor and system independent boot 
code for Suns, Apple's PPC based Macs, and several other 'alternateive' 
(ie: not mainstream x86 PC) architectures.
