Access to shadow passwords?

Hi all,

I didn't succeed in finding a Python interface to the /etc/shadow system
database - is anybody aware of a class/module that would allow me to
check account/password expiry dates etc.? I'm a Python beginner, but I
think there's no such thing in the standard library. I'll appreciate
your help.
