The other commands I like for this are the rectangle commands.  "C-x r t" will
allow you insert a rectangle and "C-x r k" will allow you to "kill" a
rectangle.  Probably best to read up on the commands (C-h k C-x r t) to figure
out how to use them as I don't think I can describe them well. :-)
