Updating Python...Newbie alert!

Hi all,

        Being quite new to Linux, I am having a bit of a problem when it
comes to updating my installed version of Python(1.5.2) to the version
that I have now(2.2).  
        My problem is that I compiled Python in the directory that I 
downloaded and now I don't know where to put all of the files that were
generated!  It works, I ran the tests and it all came out fine, but I
just don't know where to put the files for maximum efficiency.
