Parsing system ini files (beginner)

I am currently teaching myself how to use Python, I have no programming
experience. In one of the books I am using they have an exercise that asks
you to create a program that parses the contents of an ".ini" system file. I
am not sure what they mean by parse the ".ini" file. If anyone has any ideas
