a) neither the python libraries nor dup2 is iso c, the topic of
comp.lang.c, so this needs to move elsewhere.  restate your question there.

b) if workarounds are suggested by people familiar with the subject matter
that is an _extremely_ strong indicator that what you want to do cannot be
done any other way.
