Transparent GIFs out of Piddle?

We need to produce some simple bar graphs for a web site. They need to
be GIFs with a transparent background. We are considering Piddle but
it doesn't seem to support transparency.

It may be possible to post-process the GIF with PIL but I wondered if
anyone had any suggestions on the best way to do this?
