Learning how to program... but what's the best way?

Thanks to all who replied. I got some good ideas here, that I will certainly 
try. First I'm going to find out more about why she wants to learn programming 
and what interests of her could be combined with it.

I knew I could count on the newsgroup. Next day, 7 replies. :)  Nice.
