If you don't mind readability ;-) how about
>>> chomp = lambda s: (s, s[:-1])[s[-1]=='\n']
>>> chomp('abc')
'abc'
>>> chomp('abc\n')
'abc'
>>> chomp('abc \n')
'abc '
