That is not necessarily true. Evolution produces whatever can survive.
There is no direction to evolution. Evolution does not drive towards
complexity nor does it drive towards simplicity. It drives towards
survivability.
There To a first approximation all life on earth is unicellular. Add in the
second order terms and you have to include insects. More complex species are
negligible.
