commands and Scientific.MPI problems

I've been using Scientific.MPI lately and came across some strange 
behaviour. When working on cluster running MPICH 1.2.1..7 and running a 
script which uses commands.getstatusoutput() or commands.getoutput(), 
reduce/send/receive calls don't work. I get 'Internal error: msg packet 
discarded' errors coming from gmpriv.c:814. But when working on a cluster 
running MPICH 1.2.2 they work fine. Using os.getcwd() instead of 
commands.getstatusouput('pwd') works fine on both too.
